As we have learned over the years, a well designed stand-alone solar electric system will supply electricity come rain or shine. That kind of independent, or off-grid, system stores energy for nights and cloudy days in a bank of batteries. Houses and businesses which totally rely on the local utility company lose all power during a temporary blackout or when weather or earthquake damage knocks out power lines for days.

In the above left picture the Magnum 4400 watt inverter is mounted on a Midnite Solar EPanel and below that is a secure battery box also made by Midnite Solar. The larger battery box on the right hold 8 large batteries. With a Back-up Power System, even when the grid goes down, you can still have power for essential electrical loads -.with or without an alternate source of power. You just charge the batteries with the normal AC current or with other sources, such as solar or wind power generators. Back-up Power Systems rely on a bank of batteries to store enough energy to power certain appliances and circuits. The kind of Back-up Power System you choose will depend on how you plan to charge your batteries and how much energy you need to store. Try to figure out what outlets, lights and other circuits should be protected from brownouts and blackouts.  The converter (inverter) equipment we use now allows us to have 110volts AC or 220/240volts AC clean power available from the batteries.

Common sizes using a Magnum Energy’s sine wave inverter that delivers very clean power:

Backup sys 4000  110-220 volts AC with 24 volt battery bank (4800 amp hrs) $7,800

This system will keep a home or business going for 6-8 hrs or so at a reduced load mode (no AC) or for a couple of days with a very reduced mode.

Backup sys 9000  110-220 volts AC with 48volt battery bank (9600 amp hrs) $13,400

• This system will keep a home or business going for 12-16 hrs or so at a moderately reduced load mode (no AC) or for a several days with a very reduced mode.
